Aspergers Syndrome
Aspergers syndrome is a form of autism that is on the higher end of the autism spectrum. They will most likely be able to communicate normally and have completely normal language skills. The problem that a person with aspergers has is with people in social situations. They become noticeable when a child becomes old enough to go to school and interact with other children. The child with aspergers can have all of the symptoms of the syndrome or only a couple of them. These are some of the common symptoms of aspergers.
1. The child might have a difficult time approaching other children and starting conversations. They will also show a great deal of difficulty in talking with other children their age.
2. A child with aspergers syndrome will use words that are beyond
their
age group. They tend to speak with words that are more common for an
adult.
3. They will find it hard to tell if someone is joking or being
sarcastic
with them. The different tones of voice are something that they cannot
understand.
4. Their interests will be limited to very few things. For
instance, a
child with aspergers might enjoy making puzzles and will focus all of
their
attention on this, only wanting to work on puzzles. They will often
learn
everything that there is to learn on the one area that they are
interested in.
5. A child with aspergers will not accept change very easily.
When a
child with this syndrome begins school they might have a hard time
transitioning
from their home routine to the new one that includes school.
6. Some children with aspergers will talk a great deal. It does
not
matter if you participate in the conversation or not, they are really
just
talking at you and not to you.
7. They will also have a difficult time making friends with other
children. When they do try, very often they will come on too strong and
drive
other children away.
8. They will not make eye contact when they are speaking to you.
This is
fairly common with people who have autism.
9. They will display repetition in their movements and will rock
back and
forth or they will bounce in their seat. This type of movement will help
the
child to calm himself.
10. The way that they speak is flat without emotion and
inflection. They
will often speak very quickly and will not check to see if the person
they are
speaking to is listening to them.
11. Children who have aspergers might be uncoordinated. They will
find it
difficult to accomplish tasks like learning to ride a bicycle.
These children can lead very normal lives with all of their symptoms. They are the highest functioning with autism. Normally they are very intelligent and display extraordinary language skills. It is possible for a child with aspergers to learn the social skills that they are lacking.
